LLM International Criminal Law
Columbia University School of Law and the Amsterdam Law School offer a joint LLM programme in International Criminal Law. The central aim of this track is to train a new style of international criminal lawyers by offering a broad and deep understanding of relevant issues and supporting the development of academic skills through the analyzing of such issues.

Application Process
Deadline for enrolment in September is on the 1st of April.
Enrolment in February is also possible, with a deadline of the 1st of November.
Registration is done though an online platform. In addition to that, the following documents need to be mailed:
- Printed version of the completed online application form
- Certified copy of university transcript including grades
- Certified copy of university diploma
- Official copy of your TOEFL/IELTS/CE score
- Curriculum vitae
- A motivation letter
- Copy of your secondary school/high school diploma
Applicants will be selected on the basis of study results and motivation by an Admission Board. The criteria that are employed by this board are as follows:
- A GPA of at least a 7.5 (on a scale from 1-10)
- A motivation for the programme with demonstrable affinity with research and with the subject matter of the programme
- Demonstrable experience in the field of the subject matter
- Level of analytic and writing skills
- Curiosity, creativity, and an independent mid-set
Program structure
This track combines the study of theoretical aspects and foundations of international criminal law with its practical application, by offering a workshop in criminal tribunals and providing opportunities to engage in internships.
Amsterdam Law School students and Columbia Law School students complete the programme as a group, spending the first semester at the Amsterdam Law School and the second at Columbia Law School.
In the first semester, the compulsory courses are Comparative Introduction to Civil and Common Law, International Criminal Law, International Criminal Tribunals – Substantive Law, International Criminal Tribunals – Procedural Aspects.
Elective courses are also available and everything will amount to 60 ECTS.
Career prospects
This programme prepares students for a career in international criminal law. Graduates will be singularly qualified to assume leadership roles in the world of international criminal tribunals, the ICC, national legal institutions and law firms, International Criminal Law academia and ministries of foreign affairs, justice and defence.
