LLM Public International Law

The Public International Law track is taught by leading international law scholars with a high academic reputation and broad experience in the practice of international law. In addition to lectures, most courses are taught in smaller seminars or working groups allowing for a challenging exchange of ideas on the latest developments and academic insights in this dynamic area of law.

Scholarships: only available for Non-EU/EEA students

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship is for outstanding students who meet the following criteria:

  • An LLB degree with an average grade of 7.5 (on a scale from 1-10) and been admitted to one of the Amsterdam Law School's LLM programmes.
  • No more than five years have elapsed between obtaining the LLB degree and starting the LLM programme.
  • They have not already obtained an LLM or any other master degree at the University of Amsterdam, and have not been granted another scholarship.

The eligibility assessment will be made on the basis of an AMS motivation letter, grade point average, resume, motivation letter and letters of reference regarding your academic qualities.

The scholarship equals the amount of the tuition fee. The deadline for application is on the 1st of April.

Accommodation: The University does not provide accommodation itself, but assists students in finding it.

 

Application Process

Deadline for enrolment in September is usually on the 1st of April.

Enrolment in February is also possible, usually with a deadline of the 1st of November.

Registration is done though an online platform. In addition to that, the following documents need to be mailed:

  • Printed version of the completed online application form
  • Certified copy of university transcript including grades
  • Certified copy of university diploma
  • Official copy of your TOEFL/IELTS/CE score
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of your secondary school/high school diploma

 

Program structure

The programme introduces students to the core areas of general International law, including Sources, International responsibility, International Organisations, and Human Rights. There is ample room for elective courses (about half of the programme) and the wide variety of electives allows you to design a programme to match your specific interests and ambitions.

The curriculum comprises a compulsory course (Principles and Foundations of International law), a core-course (International Dispute Settlement, International Responsibility, or International Organisations) and elective courses from the course catalogue.

The programme is concluded with the writing of a thesis and everything will amount to 60 ECTS.

 

Career prospects

This Master's programme is intended for students who are interested in pursuing a career in international organisations, NGOs, internationally oriented law firms, in-house law departments in multinational companies around the world, European Union institutions, national public institutions, adjudication bodies and academic or legal research.
