Definition
Contingent claim (bankruptcy and insolvency law) (Ro.: creanţă contingentă, Fr.: créance conditionnelle, n.f., Gr.: αξίωση υπό αίρεση, Cz.: podmíněná žaloba) (See also: contingent liability) = a claim that may be made against the debtor only if a specific future event occurs.
For example: when the debtor is a co-signer on another person’s loan, a contingent claim may be raised against the debtor if the main debtor fails to pay.
