LL.M. in Law and Economics Bilkent University

In today's world, where interaction between law and economics has become clearer under the light of the developments in relation to globalisation, the need for experts, who not only know the legal framework of market economy well, but also can comprehend the economic effects of legal rules and analyse the economic sides of different legal regimes, is growing. This LL.M is a multidisciplinary programme, which aims to provide students with expertise on the legal framework of market economy as well as in the fields of Competition Law and Economic Regulation and with ability to adopt the interaction between law and economics in modern practice of these disciplines.

Bilkent University, founded in 1984, is the first private university in Turkey. It offers 29 bachelor’s and 51 graduate programs in a variety of fields to the 13,000 students, who are currently enrolled in the university. Its Library is the most extensive academic library in the country; visited by 800,000 researchers and students each year. Bilkent University ranks 28th in Times Higher Education’s 100 Under 50 league table of the world’s best young universities

Application Process

Applications to this LL.M are accepted from candidates with a good Law degree from a recognised University, who show promise of scholarly achievement. Candidates, who are non-native English speakers, are also required to prove fluency in written and oral English by providing an English language certificate with a good score: 

• TOEFL IBT (at least 87) 

• IELTS (at least 6.5 average and 5.5 from each section) 

• Bilkent COPE (at least C)

Deadline: Applications at Bilkent University are accepted until early June each year (June 12, 2015 was last year's deadline). Only on-line applications are accepted.

Documents: All required documents are to be submitted to the Faculty of Law by the application deadline: 

a) a completed application form 

b) certified copies of their degree certificate and transcripts, detailing the courses studied and grades attained. Applicants holding Bachelor’s Degree in Law and/or LL.M. degrees obtained from Universities abroad are required to submit diploma equivalence provided from the Turkish Council of Higher Education.

c) English language test scores

Candidates might be called for an interview in June. In 2015, LL.M interviews were conducted on June, 16-17.

International Applicants: It is very important that each student should confirm their country's visa regime with Turkey via the Turkish Consulate in their own country. Students who are coming from a country, which is exempted from the visa requirement to enter Turkey, should not have to apply to the Turkish Consulates for any kind of visa. However, the student who are coming from a country, which is not exempted from the visa requirement to enter Turkey, should apply for a visa as soon as they receive their admission confirmation from Bilkent University.

 

Programme Structure

• Core Courses (63 ECTS):  Economic Analysis of Law; Economics of Competition; Competition Law; Economic Regulation and Law; Energy Law and Policy; Public Economic Law; Telecommunications Law; Banking Regulation Law; Capital Markets and Market Abuse.

• Elective Course (4 ECTS): Students must select one of the elective courses offered by Bilkent University. 

• Team Project (10 ECTS)

Career Prospects: This programme's graduates, having been trained in economics as well as law, are able to pursue careers as investment experts and legal consultants, who can interpret the legal rules by taking economic points of view into consideration and comment on a certain economic behaviour in the contexts of different legal systems.
